裏道の石垣でトヤマシノブゴケが見られます。全国でよく見られる大型のコケで、雨の後の湿った葉はとても美しいです。日当たりのよさによって緑～黄色まで色が変化するようです。


"Toyama-Shinobu-Goke (トヤマシノブゴケ)" mosses grow on a stone wall on the back road. They are large mosses that grow all over Japan. The wet leaves after raining are very beautiful. The color of the leaves vary from green to yellow depending on the exposure of sunshine.

 トサカホウオウゴケがオレンジ色の胞子体をつけています。ホウオウゴケという名前は、葉の形が、伝説上の鳥である鳳凰の尾羽の形に似ていることに由来します。世界遺産・平等院の鳳凰堂に据えられている鳳凰像（一万円札の裏面にも描かれています）の尾羽と見比べてみると、確かに形が似ていることがわかります。

エゾスナゴケが胞子体を伸ばしています。胞子体は赤いとんがり帽子をかぶっているようでユニークです。エゾスナゴケは強い光や乾燥に強く、都市部でも見られる身近なコケですが、湿ると写真のように淡い緑色の葉が星形に開いてきれいです。


The "Ezo-Sunagoke (エゾスナゴケ)" mosses are growing their sporophytes. Their sporophytes are unique because they look as if they were wearing a red pointy hat. The "Ezo-Sunagoke" mosses are resistant to strong sunlight and dryness, so they are common even in urban areas. When they get wet, they open their light green leaves in the shape of star. They are beautiful.

中学校舎の中庭で、コバノチョウチンゴケが新芽を出しています。早春に出る新芽はとても鮮やかな緑色できれいです。


2枚目の写真は、造精器があつまっている部分で、雄花盤（ゆうかばん）と呼ばれ、花のように見えます。


The "Kobano-Chouchin-Goke (コバノチョウチンゴケ)" mosses are starting to sprout in the courtyard of the junior high school building. The sprouts that grow in early spring are very bright green and beautiful. The second photo shows the part where there is antheridium looking like a flower.

コスギゴケが胞子体をつけていました。スギゴケのなかまは、体がスギの枝のように見えることが特徴です。コスギゴケは理科の教科書でもコケ植物のセン類の代表として紹介されている植物で、馴染みのあるコケです。


The "Ko-Sugigoke (コスギゴケ)" mosses are bearing their sporophytes. Mosses belonging to the "Sugigoke (スギゴケ)" group have a body that looks like the branches of Japanese cedar trees. The "Ko-Sugigoke" moss is familiar to us because they are introduced in science textbooks as typical of mosses belonging to the Musci group.

写真はカエデの樹皮に着生しているミノゴケの胞子体です。胞子体の先端のふくらみを朔（さく）といい、中に胞子が入っています。和名は、朔が長い毛の生えた帽子状のものをかぶっており、蓑をかぶっているように見えることに由来します。


The photo shows the sporophytes of a "Mino-Goke (ミノゴケ)" moss growing on the bark of a maple tree. The swelling tips of the sporophytes are called capsules and have spores inside. The name comes from the fact that their sporophytes have a hairy hat-like thing that looks like a Japanese traditional raincoat "Mino (蓑)".

中学校舎の中庭にコバノチョウチンゴケが見られます。早春から鮮緑色の新芽を出すためよく目立ちます。写真は雄花盤と呼ばれるつくりで、芽の先端に造精器が集まってカップ状の形をつくっています。


I found a moss called "Kobano-Chouchin-Goke (コバノチョウチンゴケ)" in the courtyard of the junior high school building. They stand out because they sprout new bright green shoots in the spring. The photo shows the part called "splash-cup", which is a cup-shaped tip of its shoot filled with its antheridia.

校舎の壁でギンゴケを見つけました。強い光や乾燥などに強く、全国の道端で最もよく見られるコケの一つです。名前は、乾燥時に太陽光を反射し、銀色に輝いて見えることに由来します。


この群落は、乾燥しているとき(写真左)はほとんど白色ですが、湿っているとき(写真右)は緑が濃くなります。乾燥時は太陽光を反射することで身を守り、湿潤時には光を吸収し光合成をするための工夫と考えられます。


I found a moss called "Gingoke(ギンゴケ)" on the school building's wall. As they are resistant to strong sunlight and dryness, they are one of the most common moss plants seen along the roads in Japan. The name means "silver moss" and comes from their silver color when the dry moss reflects sunlight.
This colony is almost white when they are dehydrated but become greener when they are moist. It's considered that, when they are dehydrated, they reflect the sunlight to protect themselves and when they are moist, they can photosynthesize.

キャンプ場の近くの木で、フルノコゴケを見つけました。黒い球のようなものが朔（さく、胞子をつくる器官）で、花のように見えるものは、朔が開いたものです。和名は古鋸苔（ふるのこごけ）で、湿って開いた葉のようすが古いノコギリの歯のように見えることに由来します。


I found this moss called "Furunoko-Goke (フルノコゴケ)" on a tree near the campsite. The black balls are capsules, which produce spores, and the flower-looking things are open capsules. The name means "old saw moss" and it comes from the fact that the wet open leaves look like saw teeth.

共生の森の近くで、サヤゴケを見つけました。乾燥や大気汚染に強く、都市部でも見つけることができるコケです。和名は、朔（さく、胞子をつくる器官）の柄が葉に包まれていることに由来します。


I found a moss called "Saya-goke (サヤゴケ)" near the Kyoseinomori-Forest (共生の森). They are resistent to dryness and air pollution, so you can find them in urban areas. "Saya (サヤ)" in its name means "sheath" and comes from the fact that the stalks in their capsules, which produce spores, are wrapped by leaves.
